meet the Teacher and Unit - Sam Smithson
Welcome, Reader! My name is Sam Smithson, and I am an aspiring teacher. I am a Junior at University of Wilmington studying political science. I am involved on campus in the North Carolina Teaching Fellows Scholarship Program and Sigma Nu Fraternity Inc. I have always taken an interest in my civic duty to my country. I believe that begins with having a basic understanding of American government. This class, in most schools, is combined with an economics portion that most teachers are not as enthusiastic about, but I am. I think money management is the most critical lesson that we can teach graduates. This unit is directed at money management skills and decision making process. The beginning of the unit starts off with basic vocabulary attainment. The vocabulary learned during this lesson will be for terminology in the decision making process. The second will apply that vocabulary in a budgeting activity. The third will be how to write a check and deposit cash so that they can have a budget to balance. Also, during this lesson they will learn how to balance their checkbook. The fourth lesson is to teach the students about interest and total costs so that the budgets they created will be more accurate. The fifth and final lesson is on fraud centered around fraud detection so the students feel like they are protecting the money they could earn and save in the future.
